Karakoram Highway (KKH)
KKH Skardu Road
Construction of Mansehra- Naran-Jalkhad Road

In 1958, it started as a modest project to provide an all weather road link between Swat and Gilgit which grew into a mega highway project when, in 1966, it was decided to link China with Pakistan through a highway. Initially the construction remained limited to a shingled road, with temporary bridges, between Thakot and Khunjerab (about 400 km) and the link was affected in February 1971. In
the second phase the limits of the highway were extended up to Havelian, the temporary bridges were replaced with permanent ones and the road widened and carpeted to highway standards. The project was completed in 1978. The work involved 21 million cubic meter of rock blasting and earthwork, using over 8000 tonnes of explosive and 80,000 tonnes of cement. On the average 15,000 men, 1200 vehicles and 1000 pieces of plant/machinery were employed on the project. During the construction 404 people lost their life and about the same number were seriously injured.

To convert a rudimentary jeepable track, constructed by PWD in the late sixties, FWO was called upon to provide a proper road link between KKH and Skardu. The construction started in 1974 and completed in 1984. The length of the road is 170 KM with 7 meter of rock cut and 3.66 meter of black top. The work involved 3.6 million cubic meter of rock cut, using 5578 tonnes of cement, 2954 tonnes of bitumen and 12.7 tonnes of explosive. During the construction 136 people lost their life and 82 were seriously injured.

The construction of Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road (MNJ) 162 KM long was awarded to FWO in July 1997. The road has a lot of signifcance and importance for tourism, besides its strategic importance of linking Neelum Valley with Karakoram Highway.

Makran Coastal Highway Project (MCHP)
Rehabilitation/Improvement of Torkham-
Jalalabad Road Project (Afghanistan)
Lahore-Sheikhupura Faisalabad Dual
Carriageway (BOT Project)

Mkran Coastal Highway is a project of vital national importance undertaken by FWO. Construction of this highway has not only generated enormous economic activities in the region but has also paved way to create employment opportunities for the poor people living along the 800 KM long coastal belt. Makran Coastal Highway is 650 KM long having 50 Bridges and 862 culverts. The project was completed in September 2006.
Torkham-Jalalabad Road project starts from Pakistani boarder at Torkham and ends at the outskirts of Jalalabad, which is the major city en route to Kabul. The length of this road is approximately 75 KM. The project was completed two months before stipulated time. Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Shaukat Aziz & President of Afghanistan Mr. Hamid Karzai jointly inaugurated the Torkham-Jalalabad Road at Jalalabad on 13 Sep 2006.
It was the frst BOT (Build, Operate and Transfer)
project in Pakistan completed by BOT company M/S
LAFCO (Pvt) Ltd, a consortium of M/S FWO as
lead partner with M/S KRC, M/S HRL (Pvt) Ltd and
M/S Sachal Engineering Works (Pvt) Ltd. Project
was completed 6 months before completion period.
The BOT arrangement will help the government
in reducing the fnancial strain and inviting private
sector to join hand in development of country.

Lyari Expressway South Bound

In order to provide congestion free and environment friendly route from interior city of Karachi, a two lane Lyari Expressway 32 km in length is being constructed along both
banks of Lyari River. It has four interchanges, 16 fyovers, 2 bridges and service road of 25 km. It is being constructed using reinforced earth technology and construction of box
and single girder bridges. South bound of Lyari Expressway was opened for traffc in Feb 2008, whereas construction activities are in full swing on North bound.

Khanpur Dam
Thermal Power Station Muzaffargarh

Extension of Man- gla Hydro Electric Power Station

The project of Khanpur Dam was awarded to FWO in June 1982 and was completed before the target date of 30 June 1983 Project required flling and compaction of 2.44 Million Cubic Meters rock and earth To dissipate energy of water falling over the spillway glacis, construction of a plunge poo
was proposed. The excavation for the plunge pool in rock could not be undertaken in the normal way, being so close to the spillway structure. Once again, FWO accepted this
challenge and agreed to handle this sensitive work. It is a matter of great satisfaction that the entire work involving controlled blasting and mass concreting was also completed in time.

The Project includes construction of 3 oil fred steam operated units of 210 MW each. Muzaffargarh being in the seismic zone, the design of monstrous powerhouse and other buildings was more complex and complicated. The four tier inspections and supervision by WAPDA, NESPAK, TPE of Ukraine and GSC made it more challenging to keep the quality of work up to its highest level. The interaction of these agencies provided FWO an excellent exposure to the work of international level.

The civil works included 170 structures of different types, 4.5 KM of cable trenches/ducts/ tunnels, sewerage line of 1.5 KM, Internal roads of 7 KM and approximately 2000 foundations in different sizes. Functionally these structures can be divided into Fuel Oil Management
Complex, Main Power House Building Complex, Combined Auxiliary Buildings, Water Treatment Area, Heat Dissipation Area, Fuel Exhaust Complex and Switch Yard Complex. Two chimney stacks of 196 meter high concrete structures are part of this project, standing on sandy soil with foundation of only 3 meter depth..

FWO undertook the challenge of extension of
the Mangla Hydro Electric Power Station Unit
No. 9 & 10. The task was unique in nature as,
demolition of concrete plug with cautious blasting
in the presence of already existing hydraulic
structure demanded precise and specialist job,
for which FWO is proud to be the expert in
Pakistan. Concreting of 488 meters long tunnel
was completed by using concrete pumps specially
imported for this purpose. Foundation of the down
stream wall was raised in 18 meters of standing
water by sheet piling. This project was planned
to enhance the power generation capability of
the Mangla Hydro Electric Power Station by 25
percent i.e. 200 mega watts to the existing capacity.

(MCHP)Rehabilitation of Sukkur Barrage

Sukkur Barrage located on River Indus at Sukkur was
constructed in 1932 with a designed discharge of 1.5
Million cusecs. The command area of barrage is 8.4 Million acres and is the world’s largest single unifed irrigation system. The barrage and its off taking seven canals hold a strategic position in the agricultural economy of Sindh Province. The development of cracks in pier no 1 and pits in barrage apron in front of Bay No. 1,2 and 3 created an alarm at national level and Government of Sindh requested FWO to undertake the project.

The rehabilitation works extended from earthwork to multifarious specialized engineering tasks, like construction and removal of cofferdam, construction of link canal at Ruk complex, dewatering, sheet piling, grouting of barrage foundation, geo physical survey, sub surface investigation, installation of piezometers, laying of inverted flters, closing of tail channel, dredging of both pockets, and mass concreting of barrage apron. The project was completed within the stipulated time period of 6 x months.
